Federer: Djokovic Not Peaking…Yet
Good news for Novak Djokovic is bad news for rivals.Fresh off claiming his second straight Grand Slam at the US Open, Djokovic has regained his championship form, but hasn’t hit his peak play…yet, says Roger Federer.Roddick: Quality That Makes Federer Truly SpecialDjokovic, who swept Federer in the Cincinnati final in August, collected his 14th career Grand Slam championship in Flushing Meadows, equaling his childhood hero, Pete Sampras, for third place on the all-time list. The 31-year-old Serbian is playing “very, very well” said Federer, but hasn’t yet reproduced the level he showed in 2016 when he beat Andy Murray to complete the career Grand Slam at Roland Garros.“I think that there is more to come from Novak,” Federer said at the Andy Roddick Foundation charity event in Austin, Texas on Monday. “I still don’t even think he is playing his absolute best since his injury.”
Two years ago, Djokovic joined the giants of the game capturing his fourth consecutive Grand Slam crown and 12th major title. He joined Don Budge and Rod Laver as only the third man in history to hold all four major championships simultaneously—47 years after Laver completed the feat.Federer says Djokovic’s level was higher during his dominant days of 2016, but asserts Serbian should be encouraged that he can elevate his game even more.“He is playing very, very well, but I think in his best years, a few years ago, when he was almost, virtually, unbeatable I still think he has a little bit extra to go,” Federer said. “So I think that’s very encouraging for him.”Photo credit: AP Photo]]>
