11th Time’s a Charm for Tommy Paul vs Moutet in Delray Beachy

Ten match points went begging in the ninth game of the final set of Tommy Paul’s 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Corentin Moutet on Tuesday at the Delray Beach Open.

Fifth-seeded Paul drilled down and finished off his two hour and 30-minute oddysey to take his place in the second round, where Australia’s Adam Walton waits.

Credit Moutet for his guile and his refusal to quit. He threw a bevy of drop shots Paul’s way as he held serve in the marathon game, then drank a Coco Cola during the changeover, but in the end his efforts were in vain.

“On both sides of the court we were scrapping,” Paul said. “I was happy to hold in that last game, I had a ton of match points in his service game, and that always makes it a little more difficult”
