“A Complete Roller Coaster” – Shelton Tries to Make Sense of Difficult Wimbledon Loss
After a difficult loss at Wimbledon, Ben Shelton was left to pick up the pieces of what has been a truly strange season. Defending quarterfinal points, he came in as the highest men’s singles seed that the American men have had at Wimbledon since 2007 (at No.4), but leaves wondering what went wrong.

“This is definitely one of the toughest losses of my career, coming here at Wimbledon. First time I’ve lost in the first round here,” Shelton told reporters. “I came in playing really good tennis. I didn’t even think I played a poor match today. Things just didn’t go my way.”
Shelton, who has won three titles in 2026, says there’s plenty to be positive about. More difficult would be trying to put a finger on what went wrong at the last two majors, where Shelton lost in the second round to Raphael Collignon in straight sets in Paris, then fell today to Virtanen, a qualifier who played lights-out tennis.
“I’m not exactly sure what it’s been this year,” he said. “Obviously it’s been a complete roller coaster, doing well at big tournaments, obviously quarterfinals of Australia at the beginning of the year, winning three titles, two of them being 500s. Everything else in between I felt has been pretty poor.
“Hasn't been a great year for me. It's been a tough year. I've had a lot of really tight matches, deciding set tiebreakers, deciding sets that I've lost. I think that sometimes these things can happen. I think this year it's happened a lot more for me than I would like."To be fair, Shelton’s season has not been bad at all, especially if we scrape away his Roland Garros and Wimbledon. He’s 25-10 overall, and 5-2 against the Top 20.
He’s eager to pick up the pace on the US hard courts, a time to shine for all American players.
“Tennis is a game where it usually only takes one to get you back on the right track,” he said.
“For me now, it’s just focusing on the U.S. hard court swing. Obviously a much earlier exit here than I would have hoped, but the best part of the season for me is coming up.”
