Fernandez Defeats Valentova for Osaka Crown

Leylah Fernandez ousted 18-year-old Tereza Valentova 6-0, 5-7, 6-3, for her fifth career title at the Japan Open in Osaka on Sunday.

Fernandez will rise to No.22 in the WTA rankings and become the No.1 Canadian once again on Monday.

She had to battle to get past the first-time finalist on Sunday. Valentova, a former junior Grand Slam champion, pushed the Canadian to a third set with feisty tennis.

“First of all, congratulations Tereza,” Fernandez said during the trophy presentation. “You played amazing, and it’s been a wonderful week for you, your coach and your family. I’m sure I’m going to see you in many more finals like this one.”

Fernandez broke critically for 3-1 in the final set. Valentova saved three break points to avoid going double break down, then broke to get back on serve at 3-4, but the Canadian reeled off the next two points from there to close out the victory in two hours and 15 minutes.
