Novak Djokovic’s road to Roland Garros won’t include a stop in Madrid.

Grand Slam king Djokovic officially withdrew from the Mutua Madrid Open today citing his need for rest and recovery. Djokovic has been bothered by a shoulder issue at time this season.

“Madrid, unfortunately I won’t be able to compete @MutuaMadridOpen this year,” Djokovic wrote in a post on X. “I’m continuing my recovery in order to be back soon. Hasta pronto!”

Djokovic joins world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz in withdrawing from Madrid, set for April 20th-May 3rd.

The owner of 101 career titles, Djokovic has not played since suffering a physical 6-4, 4-6, 6-7(5) loss to Jack Draper in a dramatic Indian Wells round-of-16 match last month.

The 38-year-old Serbian superstar has posted a 7-2 record in 2026, including upsetting Jannik Sinner to reach the Australian Open finals in January.

A three-time Madrid champion, Djokovic lost to Matteo Arnaldi in his 2025 Madrid Open opener.

Despite his opening-round Madrid loss and the fact he skipped Rome last year, Djokovic still went on to reach the 2025 Roland Garros semifinals bowing to Sinner.
