Konta and Halep Won the Wimbledon Ratings War

Johanna Konta was a ratings darling at this year’s Wimbledon. The 26-year-old British No.1 also had a little help from Romania’s Simona Halep. The pair contested a dramatic quarterfinal match that outpaced all other matches carried by the BBC at this year’s Wimbledon.Konta’s thrilling three-set victory was watched by a peak of 7.4 million viewers, the BBC's best TV figures for the 2017 tournament. The number was a million more than the peak audience for the men's final, according to Reuters.

"It's a massive compliment and a brilliant thing for tennis. It's great that so many people got invested and involved in my match and were living the moment with me," Konta told the BBC. "I've definitely noticed that I've been recognized on the street more but it's always positive. People have only said good things and congratulated me on my run and said I've inspired them or their children." ]]>
