Borg: Djokovic is GOAT
Bjorn Borg has weighed in on tennis’ GOAT debate.
“Djokovic for me, is the greatest player to ever play the game,” said the 11-time major champion in an interview with Sky Sports. “Then in second place comes Federer and Nadal – they are tied for second place.”
Hard to argue with Borg, as Djokovic has outpaced his rivals in major titles amassed, and owns the head-to-head advantage against both. Drill down into the Masters 1000 events and you’ll get more proof that Djokovic’s body of work, at least in terms of numbers, looks better than his Big Three brethren: Djokovic has 40, Nadal 36 and Federer 28.
Numbers, of course, don’t tell all of the story, but Borg’s opinion has been echoed by many a pundit over the last few years, as Djokovic has reached 24 majors and continued to play at a high level as his 39th birthday (next May) approaches. Earlier this month became the oldest player in history to reach all four major semifinals in a single season.
The Swedish icon, who recently released his new book, “Heartbeats”, a memoir about his life and career, says that he hopes Djokovic will play another full season.
“He’s 38 years old, it’s going to be tough with Sinner, Alcaraz and some other players, too. But still he can do it and I hope he has the motivation to play at least another year.”
All signs point to that happening. Djokovic insists that he has no plans for wrapping up his stratospheric career, and he recently announced that he will be playing in playing in Shanghai in early October.
