Camila Osorio pulled a stunner on Wednesday in the first night session of the 2025 BNP Paribas Open, defeating 2018 champion Naomi Osaka, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the second round.

It was a rough night for the four-time major champion, who committed 50 unforced errors – an average of 2.5 per game – and was broken three times against the 53rd-ranked Colombian in her first match since retiring from her third-round loss to Belinda Bencic at the Australian Open.

“It’s crazy for me,” Osorio said on court. “It’s a dream come true. I really wanted to play on this court. I was excited and looking forward to playing a champion like Naomi, I can’t believe I won.”

The Colombian became the first woman from her country to ever defeat a former WTA World No.1. She will face 22nd-seeded Dane Clara Tauson in the second round.

Osaka saved a match point while serving at 3-5 in the second set, but Osorio held her nerve on serve in the next game. She saved four break points and finally closed out the one hour and 31-minute triumph with an inside-out forehand winner.

Osaka drops to 6-3 on the season with the loss, and 14-5 lifetime at Indian Wells.

WORST MATCH EVER?

“I don't think it was too good on my end, but I'm really honestly just happy that they let me play on Stadium 1 again, and it was just really good to get the experience to play another night match,” Osaka said

On social media she took a different angle, calling the match the worst she has ever played.

Osaka says that she had limited practice time after completing her recovery from the abdominal strain that plagued her in January. It wasn't enough time to get into top form.

"There were certain things that felt extremely off, because I could only start practice serving after a certain amount of time and stuff like that," she said. "So I think given the situation, it wasn't that terrible."
