Welcome to the Talia Gibson Fairy Tale at Indian Wells

Talia Gibson is learning the true meaning of tennis paradise. The 21-year-old Aussie entered the main draw as a qualifier, and had lost each of her previous nine encounters against Top 50 players.

What happens next is the stuff of dreams.

Gibson, a hard-hitting righty who smashed 44 winners to get past Jasmine Paolini on Tuesday at Indian Wells, has now faced four Top 50 players at the BNP Paribas Open and defeated them all.

Gibson is the first women’s singles qualifier to reach the last eight at Indian Wells since Lesia Tsurenko. She got past No. 7-seeded Paolini, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 on Tuesday, Prior to that she defeated No. 41-ranked Ann Li, No. 11-ranked Ekaterina Alexandrova, and No. 17-ranked Clara Tauson.

She started 2026 with two tour-level wins and has since added five.

Gibson, ranked No. 112, is up to No. 67 in the current live rankings. Her previous high was No. 105.

She will face the winner of tonight’s tussle between Alexandra Eala and Linda Noskova next.
