Rune’s Goal, Starting in Hamburg: Be Better than Ever
Holger Rune will make his long awaited return to the ATP Tour at Hamburg in mid-May. The Dane, who suffered an achilles tendon tear in October last year, is going to get back to the court after less than eight months of recovery time.

“It’s been a long process so far, and we’re obviously following very strictly what the people I did the rehab with are saying, and my strength in my achilles is very, very good,” Rune told ATP media.
Rune has been diligent in his recovery, providing frequent updates of his progress on social media and committing to making progress as he rehabs from one of the most difficult injuries that any athlete can suffer.
“I just can’t wait to be back playing soon,” he said. “I really missed it. Now, watching a lot of tennis, it’s creeping in me that I want to get back.”
Rune, a former World No.4, was once considered a threat to rival Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner on tour, but he hasn’t been able to keep up with the two-headed force that now rules the men’s game. He’s not exactly thinking about ranking goals right now, but does know that he’d like to be a better player than he was once he restarts his career.
“We haven’t put, like, a ranking goal or anything yet. But definitely my goal is to come back as a strong player, not just being able to play one or two matches, or I feel okay, maybe I’m a bit stiff in my foot after that,” he said. “That’s not the goal. [If that was the case] I’d rather wait to play. So the goal is to be ready in Hamburg, fully ready, so I can play five hours, and not have any issues – the goal is to be back as an even better version than I was before.”
