How Sinner and Alcaraz Can Finish Turin with the No.1 Ranking

The No.1 ranking is on the line at next week’s ATP Finals in Turin, but the contest favors Alcaraz, who enters the event with an advantage of 1050 points over his rival.

Alcaraz can guarantee guarantee himself a second career year-end No. 1 ranking, and first since 2022, regardless of what Sinner earns, if he acquires 450 points at the event.

He can do that by winning all three of his round-robin matches, or reaching the final while winning two round-robin matches or one round-robin match.

Sinner must win the title to have a chance at finishing No.1, but even that might not be enough. There are different permutations of how he can accomplish this.

  • In the unlikely scenario that Alcaraz wins zero matches in Turin, Sinner must win the title while winning at least one-round robin match.
  • If Alcaraz wins one round-robin match in Turin and does not reach the final, Sinner must win at least two round-robin matches, and go on to win the title
  • If Alcaraz wins 2 matches in Turin and does not reach the final, Sinner must win the title as an undefeated champion.

Whoever ends up as year-end No.1 will become the tenth ATP player in history to achieve the feat multiple times.
