(August 17, 2011) American up-and-comer Christina McHale took a shocking second-round win from World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 7-5 at the Western & Southern Open on Wednesday.
It was a repeat first-round loss for the Dane, after receiving byes in the first round, for the second time in a row.
The game was neck and neck but the World No. 76 took a slight edge with a stronger first serve and attack on Wozniacki's second serve.
She broke serve five times of nine opportunities while only letting go of three serves. Wozniacki, known for her defensive style, only won 32 of 73 total return points.
In the end USA's new hope won 52 percent of the total points in the match in her first meeting with the top player, who had new boyfriend Rory McIlroy watching in the audience.
This marks McHale's first top-five win. McHale is the first American woman to beat a world No. 1 since Venus Williams beat Dinara Safina in the 2009 Wimbledon semifinals.
This is a shaky start to Wozniacki's attempt at taking her first Grand Slam at the US Open, especially with Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams out of the way so far with foot injuries.
