World No.48 Katerina Siniakova has made a habit of making history on the doubles court. She owns nine women’s doubles Grand Slam titles, a gold medal in women’s doubles from teh 2021 Tokyo Olympics, and a gold medal (with Tomas Machac) in this year’s Paris Olympics mixed doubles.
She’s not bad on the singles court, either.
The Czech moved a step closer to her sixth career WTA title – and first of 2024 – with a 6-4, 7-5 win over American Bernarda Pera on Friday at the Guangzhou Open.
Siniakova will face Serbia’s Olga Danilovic in the final. Unseeded Danilovic toppled Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew 6-4, 6-4, ending the dream run of the world No.163 to reach her first career WTA semifinal on a hard court.
Three unseeded women reached the last four in Guangzhou, and defending champion Wang Xinyu was not one of them. The Chinese was defeated by Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti, 6-4, 6-1, while Caroline Dolehide of the United States defeated seventh-seeded Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.
