Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova completed their fourth Grand Slam title run on Sunday in Melbourne, defeating unseeded Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil and Anna Danilina of Kazakhstan 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4, for their first title at the Australian Open.
The Czech duo has won four major titles from their last 12 appearances at the Grand Slam level, dating back to their maiden title at Roland-Garros in 2018.
Last year’s runner-ups were happy to take it one step further in 2022.
“It's amazing,” Siniakova said. “I mean, it's really nice. And after playing last year the final, we are so happy that we have the title. It was really big fight, and we needed to push hard.”
Siniakova and Krejcikova entered the final without dropping a set but they had to battle from behind against the unseeded duo.
“I think that, you know, the girls, they play well, especially the first set, and, you know, everything was going in,” Krejcikova said. “I mean, we had our chances, but we weren't able to convert them.
“In the second set I was just telling Katka, Let's keep going, let's keep playing, we gonna get our chances again, and we have to convert them."
Krejcikova improve to 4-1 in Grand Slam finals as a team with their triumph.
