Everywhere tennis fans look, American men are rising up the rankings. With 10 players inside the Top-50, and 15 in the Top-100, it’s no surprise that they are facing one another for coveted ranking points this month in Dallas.
That happened on Friday at the Dallas Open as Frances Tiafoe, the No.2 seed, was ousted by JJ Wolf in a gritty three-set battle, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Wolf, who reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open before losing to Ben Shelton in five sets, fired 11 aces and lost just two points behind his first service in the final two sets as he overcame a one-set deficit to earn his second career Top-20 win and best ever by ranking.
Wolf will face either John Isner or Emilio Gomez in semifinal action on Saturday. The 24-year-old, who improves to 7-2 on the season, is up to 37 in the live rankings with the victory.
