Day 8 of the Aussie Open was full of blistering performances. It also had its share of interesting numbers. Here are a few of them, by the numbers…
63 - Alizé Cornet has reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal to break the record for most Grand Slam main draw appearances before reaching a quarterfinal, which was previously held by Tamarine Tanasugarn (45). Cornet defeated Simona Halep in a grueling battle, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
3 - Number of American women that have advanced to the quarterfinals of the women’s singles draw - Madison Keys, [21] Jessica Pegula and [27] Danielle Collins. It’s the third time the American women have put three on the quarters since 2017.
2 - For the first time in history multiple Canadian men have reached the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam - Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime.
45 - American Danielle Collins cracked 45 winners in her three-set victory over Elise Mertens of Belgium on Sunday. The No.27 has reached the last eight at Melbourne for the second time.
2 - For the first time in Open Era, two Canadian men have reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open - Felix Auger-Aliassime, who topped Marin Cilic on Day 8, and Denis Shapovalo, who upset No.3-seeded Alexander Zverev on Day 7. The Canadians also achieved a similar feat last year at Wimbledon, when Shapovalov reached the semis and Auger-Aliassime made the quarters - that marked the first time in Open Era history that two Canadian men reached the quarterfinals of any Grand Slam.
2 - For the first time in Open Era history two Italian men have reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open. Jannik Sinner defeated Alex de Minaur in straight sets on Monday night to take his place with Matteo Berrettini in the last eight. The last time two Italian men have reached the quarterfinals at the same major was 1973, when Paolo Bertolucci and Adriano Panatta both reached the last 8.
135 - Number of times American Maxime Cressy came to the net during his four-set loss to Daniil Medvedev on Day 8. The serve-and-volleyer won 89 (66 percent) of those points, but still fell 6-2, 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 7-5.
