Anisimova won eight of the last night games defeating eighth-seeded Karolina Pliskova 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 to advance to her second San Jose quarterfinal.
It is Anisimova's first win over 2021 Wimbledon finalist Pliskova in five career meetings. Prior to today, Pliskova had won eight of nine sets against Anisimova, including a 7-5, 6-7(5), 7-6(7) triumph at the 2021 US Open.
This time, the 22nd-ranked American overwhelmed the former world No. 1 in the decisive set.
Anisimova solidified her status as a premier problem solver raising her three-set record to 14-5 in 2022—most three-set wins on the WTA Tour.
Wimbledon quarterfinalist Anisimova will play either top-seeded Maria Sakkari or compatriot Shelby Rogers for a semifinal spot.
Meanwhile, a season of struggle continues for Pliskova. The former US Open finalist fell to 10-12 on the season. Pliskova has won back-to-back matches in just two of 12 tournaments in 2022.
