Italy’s Camila Giorgi blasted past Sloane Stephens at the Toray Pan Pacific in Osaka, 6-0, 6-3.
The Italian improved to 3-2 lifetime against the No.3-seeded American with a smothering performance. Giorgi won the first eight games and saved five of six break points overall against the 2017 US Open champion.
Stephens could only manage to win 29 of 65 service points, and just 8 of 23 in the first set.
Giorgi was pushed in the second set and saved three break points to hold for 4-2, and broke for 5-2.
In other action on Thursday in Osaka, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova powered past Kiki Bertens, 6-1 7-5. The Russian, working with new coach Sam Sumyk, has faced the Dutchwoman five times in the last 12 months, winning on three occasions.
Misaki Doi (d. Donna Vekic) and Yulia Putintseva (d. Varvara Flink), were also winners on Thursday at Osaka.
Pavlyuchenkova moves on to face Doi in the quarterfinals, while Giorgi will face Belgium’s Elise Mertens.
