Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

Andy Roddick announced on Thursday that his retirement was nigh, his career lasting only as long as his current run at the US Open does.

It's as fitting a place as any to end his playing days, after all it's the site of his most well-known win, his only Grand Slam title and the victory that was the catalyst in him eventually taking the No. 1 spot in the world.

Playing in the era of Roger Federer, a number of Roddick's most memorable matches have been marathon losses, but that should not discount the remarkable wins that have punctuated his career.

Here then, one fan's look at Andy Roddick's Top 10 Career Wins.

10. Def. Xavier Malisse 6-2, 6-4, Atlanta finals, 2001: Roddick was five months from his 21st birthday and the field wasn't particularly deep. But ranked 89th in the world, he whipped No. 31 Todd Martin in the second round and dominated Belgium's Malisse 6-2, 6-4 with three service breaks to claim his first ATP title.

9. Def. Pete Sampras 7-6 (9), 6-3, Houston finals, 2002. On the hot clay courts of Texas, Roddick became the top-ranked American for the first time. He was stunning on first serves, hitting 31 of 34 (91%) for winners.

8. Def. Milos Raonic 7-6, 6-7(11), 7-5 in Memphis finals, 2011. Raonic was on fire entering the tournament off a fourth-round foray at the Australian Open, and drilled 32 aces off Roddick. But A-Rod showed he still had a bit of spring in his step against the 20-year-old Canuck, even after the marathon second-set loss, making a diving return to win the match.

7. Def. Novak Djokovic 7-6(5), 6-3 in Dubai semifinals, 2008. Roddick was still ranked No. 6 in the world, but Djokovic had become a media darling with his win at the Australian Open six weeks earlier. After knocking off No. 2 Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals, Roddick steamrolled the Serbian in 90 minutes en route to the tournament title.

6. Def. Bernard Tomic 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 in US Open second round, 2012. You could argue that there's never been more pressure on Roddick than there was the day after he announced that this US Open would be his last. Roddick domianted the Australian phenom so completely that Tomic was accused of tanking, but the 23,000 on hand at Arthur Ashe Arena preferred to think of it as the best of one of their favorites shining through yet again.

5. Def . Andre Agassi 6-1, 6-7(5), 7-6(6) in Queen's Club semifinals, 2003.  Roddick would square off with Agassi seven times, but this was the only victory. Agassi was ranked No. 2 in the world at the time, and Roddick didn't waste the momentum, moving on to take the tournament title.

4. Def. Roger Federer 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (3) in Rogers Cup semifinals, 2003. Federer won the first four meetings between he and Roddick, including the semifinals at Wimbledon earlier in 2003. Their next meeting was Roddick's for the taking as he overcame a shocking 10 double faults from Federer for his first career win against the Swiss legend.

3. Def. Pete Sampras 7-6 (2), 6-3 in Miami second round, 2001. Sampras was still at the top of his game, ranked No. 4 in the world, while Roddick was  distant 119th. But that gap closed significantly in the tropics as Roddick crashed the part, eventually making the quarterfinals.

2. Def. Juan Carlos Ferrero, 6-3, 7-6(2), 6-3 at US Open Final, 2003.
Roddick didn't defeat a single Top 10 player to reach the final, but hardly mattered with the way he was playing,  winning his third straight tournament, whipping Ferrero in the final to claim his only Grand Slam and make his move towards the No. 1 spot in the world

1. Convincing Brookyln Decker to marry him, 2009. It's still his greatest win to date, and I still don't know he managed this, but three years later they're still going strong, and retirement will just mean more monrnings waking up next to her.
