Venus Williams would love nothing more than to finish the season in the WTA’s Top-10 and it’s one of the reasons she is competing with all her might at this week’s WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai.
Paris Surprise: Isner Knocks off Federer in Tight Battle
The current World No. 11, who dropped out of the Top-10 in early 2011 and has not returned since, says it’s a goal that has been on been on her mind. "One of the reasons that I'm here is so that way I can go to the Top 10 and have a great start for next year," Williams told reporters earlier in the week.
So far Williams has taken care of her end of the bargain, notching three-set wins over Madison Keys and Saisai Zheng to qualify for the semifinals. Williams, who reached the quarterfinals at this year's Australian Open and made the second week at both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open before falling to her sister Serena at both events, claimed two titles and owns a record of 39-13 on the season.
But Venus has her work cut out for her if she is to achieve a year-end Top-10 ranking for the first time since 2010. Here’s what she’ll need, according to the WTA:
1) Venus WILL get back in the Top 10 by winning the title
If Venus wins the title, she's not only guaranteed to get back into the Top 10, but she'll go all the way up to No.7, passing Flavia Pennetta, Lucie Safarova, Angelique Kerber and Timea Bacsinszky.
2) Venus CAN get back in the Top 10 by reaching the final
If Venus reaches the final, she'll get back into the Top 10 unless...
- Suárez Navarro wins the title
- Pliskova wins the title
3) Venus CAN get back in the Top 10 even if she loses in the semifinals
If Venus loses in the semifinals on Saturday, she'll still get back into the Top 10 unless...
- Suárez Navarro reaches the final
- Pliskova wins the title
