Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz combined to finish off Team USA’s comeback win over Canada on Sunday at United Cup in Perth.
The tandem handed Felix Auger-Aliassime and Leylah Fernandez a 7-6(2), 7-5 defeat about an hour after midnight on Monday morning to lock up the win.
"After the way I lost my singles match it would have been really tough to go home today with a mixed doubles loss today as well," fourth-ranked Fritz, who lost to Auger-Aliassime 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the first rubber of the best-of-three contest. "Thank you Coco for carrying the team and we got it done."
29th-ranked Auger-Aliassime’s victory was his first against Fritz in three tries.
Gauff, ranked No.3 in the world as the 2025 season begins, defeated Fernandez 6-3, 6-2 to extend the tie. The American has won 17 of her last 20 matches dating back to her last three events of 2024.
“I'm really happy with how I played,” Gauff said after winning her first ever matchup with Fernandez. “She's a tough opponent. Kind of a physical match considering the scoreline. Overall just happy with how I started off the season. Happy to do well for my team.”
