Coco Gauff continues to ride the hot hand in Melbourne.
The 20-year-old American remained undefeated on the season and notched her 20th win from her last 22 matches with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Great Britain’s Jodie Burrage in one hour and 29 minutes.
Gauff, seeded third, will face Canada’s Leylah Fernandez, the 30th seed, in the third round.
The American improved to 7-0 on the season against the World No.173. It was an entertaining tussle with Burrage committing to first-strike tennis and stepping up and putting full weight into her ground strokes, while Gauff played her trademark brand of all-court tennis to keep her nose in front much of the way.
Gauff was ruthless against Burrage’s second serve, winning 18 of 26 such points, which helped her earn 11 break points and convert five.
The 2023 US Open champion has won each of her last 16 sets.
Burrage had her share of strong stretches, and even managed to reel off four straight games from a break down to lead the second set at 5-3, but she was ultimately undone by 45 unforced errors, against just 21 winners. Gauff, who hit 14 winners and 21 unforced errors, took the final two games to clinch the victory.
Gauff leads Fernandez 1-0 in the head-to-head, having defeated the Canadian at United Cup earlier this month, 6-3, 6-2.
“I think I just have to be ready,” Gauff said. “She’s going to play aggressive tennis and I will have to do the same.”
