Roger Federer is back on the clay and working hard on his groundies. The Swiss, who will return to the clay for the first time since 2019 this spring, posted this video of himself training for the Geneva Open, which will take place from May 16 to May 22.

Federer, who will turn 40 this summer, will play Geneva and Roland-Garros in 2021, before he switches his focus to his beloved grass. It promises to be a very solid field at Geneva this year. Here is the current entry list:

Roger Federer (SUI/ATP 8)
Denis Shapovalov (CAN/ATP 14)
Christian Garin (CHI/ATP 22)
Casper Ruud (NOR/ATP 24)
Alex de Minaur (AUS/ATP 25)
Fabio Fognini (ITA/ATP 27)
Borna Coric (CRO/ATP 29)
Filip Krajinovic (SRB/ATP 33)
Adrian Mannarino (FRA/ATP 34)
Benoît Paire (FRA/ATP 35)
Jan-Lennard Struff (GER/ATP 40)
Marton Fucsovics (HUN/ATP 41)
Alexander Bulbik (KAZ/ATP 42)
Marin Cilic (CRO/ATP 44)
Reilly Opelka (USA/ATP 45)
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (ESP/ATP 48)
Laslo Djere (SRB/ATP 49)
Guido Pella (ARG/ATP 50)
Dominik Köpfer (GER/ATP 54)

Federer has played just two matches thus far in 2021. He defeated Dan Evans in his long awaited return to the tour at Doha, then fell in the quarterfinals to Nikoloz Basilashvili, despite holding a match point.

The eight-time Wimbledon champion has repeatedly mentioned that he plans to play his best tennis on the grass in 2021. Clay, of course, will play a vital role in getting him fit and match tough for the abbreviated grass-court season, which will only run for two weeks after Roland-Garros, which has been pushed back by a week due to coronavirus concerns. .
