Second Serve

Earlier in the week we tabbed Alejandro Gonzalez’s diving volley for a possible shot of the week candidate at Madrid, and it turns out we were right. There were plenty of doozies this week at Madrid—a super dropper from Gael Monfils that was pretty high on the cool quotient as well as a gorgeous lob from Rafael Nadal that brought the crowd to a fever pitch. But in the end we think Gonzo takes the cake.

We’ll give second place to Andy Murray for the last shot on the reel, not because of any one shot, but because the tennis he played in that point was so exquisite. He went toe-to-toe with Nadal in a heated exchange, then ripped the down-the-line backhand when he saw the smallest of windows, and finishing with the wrong-footing volley at the net.

Not only was it gorgeous tennis, but extra points because it was done against the king of clay, in Spain, in his first clay-court Masters 1000 final. What a week it was for Mr. Murray.

As far as the women's side goes, nobody topped Gonzalez either, but the production on the above video deserves an award for delivering the full Madrid experience in a three-minute vid. Slick production, lively snippets, and some good music. What more can we ask for?
