Tomljanovic Withdraws from Wimbledon with Knee Issue

By Erik Gudris | @atntennis | Monday, June 26, 2023

Ajla Tomljanovic announced her withdrawal from Wimbledon as she continues dealing with an ongoing knee issue.

The 30-year-old Australian, who reached the quarterfinals at last year’s Wimbledon, made the announcement on social media.

“After experiencing many special emotions and memories in Wimbledon over the last few years I had very high hopes of making my return there this year," Tomljanovic said in a statement. "Unfortunately, my knee is still asking for just a bit more time before I can have full confidence in it in order to play at my best level.

"Really eager to get back out there but this year Wimbledon came a bit sooner than I was ready for. I know it will be worth the wait and am already looking forward to next year.”

Wimbledon begins next Monday, July 3rd.

Currently ranked World No. 59, Tomljanovic’s run to last year’s Wimbledon quarterfinals is currently featured in the latest season of Netflix’s Break Point series. Tomljanovic lost in the last eight to the eventual champion Elena Rybakina.

The Australian star has not competed at all in 2023 after having to withdraw from this year’s Australian Open earlier in the year. After knee surgery, Tomljanovic went through recovery and hoped to make a comeback in time for the grass-court swing.

Tomljanovic is perhaps best known for defeating Serena Williams in the third round of last year’s US Open which was Williams’ final career singles match.
