In a joint statement posted on social media, the former couple called the decision to part difficult.

“The decision was incredibly difficult, because we still have love for each other,” the joint statement said.

“But it’s just two best friends realizing it’s time to take some space and help each other live the most joyous, fulfilled lives as possible.

“We won’t be commenting beyond this, and we thank you all in advance for respecting our privacy.

“Sending lots of love to everyone.”

Monfils and Svitolina brought joy to tennis fans with their shared social media posts on the g.e.m.s.life Instagram account.

Australian Open quarantine forced the couple to spend several weeks apart at the start of the season. At the start of their quarantine separation, Svitolina posted about the situation on social media.

“Gael and I have already received a letter in which it says that we are not allowed to see each other during this time in order not to expand the group of people allowed,” Svitolina said of the quarantine protocol. “It’s be uneasy to know that we are somewhere near but we may not even come close to each other.”

Professional pressure and stress may have been contributing causes to the separation.

The 34-year-old Monfils, a showman and crowd pleasing player, who has acknowledged feeling a little lost on court since the sport resumed last year largely without fans. One of tennis' top entertainers, Monfils suffered seven straight losses since the sport restarted last year, including a painful and grueling five-set loss in his Australian Open opener.

The flamboyant Frenchman broke down in tears during his AO post-match presser conceding he’s completely lost confidence on court.

“I would like to get up and tell you that this nightmare is over, but here I am,” Monfils said, tears flowing down his face. “I try to be patient, I work. But I can't find the right tempo, the right pace, my playing. And I don't feel good because I can't do what I want, because I don't have the confidence, because I can't find my game, I can't find my forehand, I can't find my serve. This is what makes me not well. It is visible. It's hard. It's frustrating. I struggle, I try to try things but I can't do it at all.”
