Serena Named SI Sportsperson of the Year

Serena Williams continues to rack up titles—even when she's not playing.

The world No. 1 has been selected as Sports Illustrated's 2015 Sportsperson of the Year.

It was a monumental season in which Williams won the first three Grand Slam titles of the season, including capturing her 21st career Grand Slam crown at Wimbledon. Williams swept Garbine Muguruza in the Wimbledon final to claim her second career Serena Slam and hold all four Grand Slam titles simultaneously.

Serena finished the season with a 53-3 record and five titles. Her only Grand Slam defeat came to Roberta Vinci in the US Open semifinals, denying her a shot to complete the Grand Slam.

Some suggest world No. 1 Novak Djokovic produced a better season. Djokovic, who also won three of the four Grand Slam titles, posted an 82-6 record, captured 11 titles, became the third man in Open Era history to contest all four major finals and finished the season with a record 15 consecutive finals to his credit.

Williams' pursuit of history helped her earn the honor.

"This year was spectacular for me. For Sports Illustrated to recognize my hard work, my dedication, and my sheer determination gives me hope to continue on and do better," Serena said in this Instagram post. "As I always say, it takes a village it's not just one person. This is not just an accomplishment for me, but for my whole team. I am beyond honored."
