Haddad Maia Suffers Freak Accident in Guadalajara Hotel

By Chris Oddo | @TheFanChild | Monday September 17, 2023It has been a tough week in Guadalajara so far, and it got tougher for the tournament on Monday night as Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia joined the list of player withdrawals after suffering a freak accident in her hotel room.Tennis ExpressThe glass shower door broke and caused the 15th-ranked 27-year-old to go to the hospital to get her hands bandaged.“Last night, Sunday, at the hotel, when I got out of the shower and opened the shower, the door simply burst and I ended up cutting some parts of my body,” Haddad Maia wrote on Instagram. “I had to go to the hospital here in Guadalajara to get stitches (including on both hands) and unfortunately I won't be able to play here in Mexico (a special place for us tennis players due to all the receptivity of the people and the efforts of the tournaments).Other than that, apart from the scare, I'm fine. It could be something much more serious. I will need a few days now to heal the wounds so I can be back for the last part of the year; and continue fighting for my 2023 goals.”

Ninth-seeded Haddad Maia was due to face Danielle Collins. She was replaced by American Lucky Loser Sachia Vickery. Vickery then advanced when Collins pulled out due to injury 7-6(7) ret.Fifth-seeded Belinda Bencic also pulled out with a stomach virus, she was replaced by American Elvina Kalieva.
