CoCo Vandeweghe and Ashleigh Barty saved three championship points to win a thrilling women’s doubles final over Kristina Mladenovic and Timea Babos, 3-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(6), on Sunday in New York.
Both halves of the American-Aussie duo each claimed their first major title—Barty on her fifth try in a major final; Vandeweghe on her third (both previous finals in mixed).
“It's finally the first time we've played together at a Grand Slam,” Vandeweghe mused in praise of her new partner Barty. “I was just dying for it. She was great to play with for two weeks. I had an amazing time out there with Ash.”
Barty and Vandeweghe saved a pair of championship points in the tenth game of the second set to hold for 5-5, and then they saved another in the third-set tiebreaker.
Babos and Mladenovic saved a pair of championships at 4-5 in the third set, but dropped the final three points of the match after holding a championship point at 6-5 in the third set tiebreaker.
“This last fortnight has been really fun on and off the court,” Barty said. “We've been relaxed. We're very hungry to go as deep as we could. It was really nice to be able to play a pretty clean tournament.”
