Keeping up with the game of tennis, by the numbers. Each day at Tennis Now we’ll give you a fresh set—without any further ado, here’s what’s happening on Day 1 of Roland Garros.
6
The number of defending Grand Slam women’s singles champions that have lost their very first match of their title defense in the open era after No.5-seeded Jelena Ostapenko fell 7-5, 6-3 to Kateryna Kozlova on Day 1.
0-9
Kozlova’s record against the Top 20 before today’s match. The Ukrainian had never earned a Top 30 win in her career—but, and this is surprising, she improves to 3-0 lifetime against Ostapenko. She also improves to 1-4 lifetime against the Top 10 and 2-7 lifetime at the Grand Slams.
24
Number of five-set wins that Fernando Verdasco has earned on tour after notching a 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3, 6-7(3), 7-5 win over Yoshihito Nishioka.
Verdasco cracked 87 winners in the match. Verdasco improves to 24-21 in five-setters and 22-20 in five-setters at the majors (5-5 at Roland Garros). But it was Nishioka, who fought bravely and was cramping in the decider, who had the bigger fan base. Listen to this crowd!
13
Double-faults turned in by Jelena Ostapenko on Day 1. The Latvian only managed a 47 percent first-serve percentage and five aces. She made 48 unforced errors against just 22 winners.
11
China’s Wang Qiang stopped an eleven match losing streak against the Top 10 by defeating World No.9 Venus Williams, 6-4, 7-5. The loss marked Williams 10th loss in the first round of a major and her fourth in the first round at Roland Garros. Williams has now lost in the first round at consecutive majors for the first time in her career.
44/52
Number of points won on serve by Alexander Zverev during his takedown of Ricardas Berankis today on Court Suzanne-Lenglen. The 21-year-old German won 17 of 21 second-serve points.
0
Number of main draw wins achieved at Roland Garros by Johanna Konta. The British No.1 fell to 0-4 lifetime at Roland Garros and 7-15 lifetime on clay with her loss to Yulia Putintseva. Afterwards Konta explained how much the media has made her aware of her poor play on clay and admitted that it affects her.
20 years, 50 days
The difference in age between 39-year-old Ivo Karlovic and 19-year-old Corentin Moutet. It was Moutet, the French wild card ranked 141, who came up with the victory in straight sets to earn his first main draw win at a major on Sunday.
