After a breezy straight-sets win over Andreas Haider-Maurer, Novak Djokovic might have still needed a workout. Thanks to a wild and crazy fan, he got it.
While doing his on-court interview with ESPN’s Brad Gilbert, the conversation turned to a dancing fan that has caught Djokovic’s attention for many years. Djokovic praised the fan for his entertaining skills then, lo and behold, the dancing maniac (no understatement) appeared on the court, ready to cut some Deco Turf with the Serb.
“I'm glad that he came down to the court,” Djokovic said. “It was not planned. I'm happy for him. You know, he's a true entertainer. I know him for definitely five years. Each year I see him in one of my matches, dancing, taking down the layers of the T-shirts… But, you know, it never gets old. It's always good to see him dance, perform. He gets the crowd going in the night session in Arthur Ashe, which is always very unique for players and for fans.”
After the dancing, the fan plopped an “I Love New York” t-shirt over Djokovic’s head for the ultimate photo op.
With his win over Haider-Maurer, Djokovic improves to 58-5 on the season and 52-9 at the US Open. In the 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 victory over the Austrian, Djokovic won all but 12 points on serve and did not face a break point. He hit 27 winners to only 7 for Haider-Maurer. The World No. 1 has not dropped a set and has dropped only 20 points on serve in his first two rounds.
He’ll face Italian Andreas Seppi in the third round.
