Frenchmen are making significant contributions to the Hot Shot stash this autumn. Last week it was Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s head-first dive to create a match point against Rafael Nadal in Shanghai, this week it’s the insane improvisational artistry of Gael Monfils in Vienna.

Watch: Tsonga Lays out for Shanghai Surprise

Unlike a lot of Monfils’ works of magic, this shot involved zero showboating. He was wrong-footed by Thomaz Bellucci and had no choice but to go for the low-percentage, akimbo smash. Lo and behold, the Monf made it. This is basically an impossible shot, made to look easy.

Two words: Only Gael.

Monfils will face Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi in the night session on Thursday in Vienna. What can he possibly do to top this hot shot? We’ll be tuning in to see.
