Second Serve

Things got very heated during last night’s semifinal battle between Roberta Vinci and Venus Williams in Wuhan. With Williams hobbled by an upper leg/ hamstring injury for the final few games of the match, Vinci became increasingly frustrated that she was not able to put Williams away.

More: Venus Williams Downs Roberta Vinci to Reach Wuhan Final

That wasn’t all she was frustrated about. As the video above shows, Vinci really starts to unravel after Williams takes a 5-3 lead in the third-set tiebreaker. The 35-year-old American takes a long time to shuffle back to the service line, and after 30 seconds Vinci starts to plead with umpire Mariana Alves to do something about it. Rather than warn her, Alves asks Williams if she’s okay.

Williams ends up double-faulting on the point, but after securing match point by clobbering a drive volley on the next point, Vinci really lets her frustration show.

Good thing Williams doesn’t speak Italian or she might have said more than just “Excuse me?”

Afterwards Vinci gave Williams the could shoulder on their post-match handshake and had the following to say about the incident to press.

What do you think? Should Alves have given Williams a warning or a soft warning? Did Vinci have a point, or was she simply being a bad sport?
