Video: Roland Garros Lights Up
Roland Garros will radiate a new glow in the City of Light.
The clay-court major is undergoing a major makeover that will eventually include lighting on every court and a retractable roof over Court Philippe Chatrier.

Sampras Says Dimitrov is Next Star
Renovations to Roland Garros began last month. Organizers issued the video above detailing the construction schedule. A view of how an illuminated Roland Garros will look appears at about the 1:40 mark of the video.
By the time the project is fully completed in 2020, the rebuilt Roland Garros will feature 18 fully-lit courts, including a retractable roof over Philippe Chatrier Court with a seating capacity of 15,000. Suzanne Lenglen Court will seat 10,000.
Currently, the French Open does not have a roof or lights on any of its courts. The 2015 US Open was played beneath the steel skeleton and covering of a retractable roof, which will be completed for the start of the 2016 Flushing Meadows major. Next year, the French Open will be the only Grand Slam tournament without a roof.
Players will benefit from the expansion as well. A new fitness center located closer to the locker rooms, new private physio rooms and a new restaurant and lounge designed exclusively for players and coaches are scheduled for 2019.
Construction will be suspended during the 2016 Roland Garros, but will still exert an impact on the tournament.
The construction project means 17 courts will be available for the 2016 Roland Garros (10 match courts and seven practice courts) rather than the 19 courts used in 2015. The tournament will contest the first round of 2016 qualifying on Monday and Tuesday. The fitness center and stringing area will move for the 2016 tournament.
