Brazil's Marcelo Melo becomes the new individual No. 1 ATP men's doubles player. It marks the first time since 2012 that neither Bob or Mike Bryan has held the top spot.
ATP: Federer Claims Seventh Basel Title Over Nadal
The 32-year-old Melo, nicknamed "Girafa", has won five doubles titles this year including recently in Vienna (with Lukasz Kubot) and Shanghai (Raven Klassen).
His biggest title came with partner Ivan Dodig when they won Roland Garros over the Bryan Brothers in the final.
“I'm living the dream, playing three tournaments…winning 500, 1000 and 500 (ATP event) points again,” said Melo to ATP.com "There was a lot of pressure on my shoulders to become No. 1. This is a tough achievement. I am a really lucky guy to be No. 1 with the Bryans still around.”
Countryman Bruno Soares said, "It feels like such a faraway dream and it's just amazing that a guy I know, who is so close to me, achieved that this year. I feel very happy for him and I think he's going to keep doing amazing things in tennis and for Brazil.”
The Bryans remain as the combined No. 1 ATP Tour doubles team.
Melo, along with Dodig, have already qualified for the ATP Tour Finals in London.
