Bulgarian Brothers Banned for Corruption


Corruption offenses will cost Bulgarian brothers their competitive careers.

Two Bulgarian players have been banned and hit with hefty fines, after being convicted of several corruption offenses, the Tennis Integrity Unit announced.

Karen Khachatryan has been banned from tennis for life and a fined $250,000. His younger brother, Yuri Khachatryan, has been banned for 10 years and fined $50,000 following a TIU investigation and hearing.

Between 2017 and 2019, 26-year-old Karen Khachatryan was responsible for several cases of corruption including:

• 5 cases of match fixing
• 9 cases of soliciting other players not to use best efforts
• Repeated failure to co-operate with the TIU investigation

Karen Khachatryan is permanently banned from playing—or attending—any tennis match sanctioned by the game’s governing bodies. Yuri Khachatryan was found guilty of betting on tennis, making corrupt approaches to a fellow pro, facilitating others gambling on the game and delaying the TIU investigation by tampering with devices and providing false information.

Both brothers have been suspended since June 2019 while the TIU investigation was ongoing.

Karen Khachatryan is currently ranked No. 2,514 while Yuri Khachatryan is ranked No. 3,126.
