Mouratoglou: No Sympathy For Sharapova

Serena Williams' coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, has no sympathy for Maria Sharapova.

The former No. 1 is appealing her two-year suspension after testing positive for the banned drug meldonium following her Australian Open quarterfinal loss to Williams.

Mouratoglou told Radio Times he can't feel sympathy for a player violating the rules, regardless of whether it was intentional or not.

"I don't feel sorry for someone who doesn't respect the rules," Mouratoglou said. "Whether she did it on purpose or not, it's a professional mistake. This is life and you have to pay for your mistakes."

Coach Mouratoglou also called Andy Murray's hiring of Amelie Mauresmo as his coach "strange" and "courageous."

"It's strange for a guy to hire a woman," Mouratoglou told Radio Times. "Nothing bad about women, but it's strange because usually they don't know the men's game as well as the women's game, and it's a very macho world.

"It was very courageous of Andy to hire her. I'm not saying it was a mistake, but he didn't win anything major with Amelie. If Andy had won two or three grand slams with Amelie, we would see it differently."
