Thiem’s diving stab was so good, and so unexpected, that all Gabashvili could do was net his very makeable volley on the play. But all credit to Thiem, who plays with passion and purpose, and never gives up on a ball. He's also not afraid to risk his life and limb--something that might change a bit as he ages (so enjoy it while you can, tennis fans).

Thiem improves to 47-11 on the season, and 6-0 on grass, with his victory.

He’ll face Philipp Kohlschreiber in the quarterfinals on Friday. Here’s another slo-mo look at Thiem’s work of genius.
