Second Serve

2015 was the first year that Mike and Bob Bryan did not win a major title since 2004. The twins would not like to see that happen again. Not this year, at least.

The Bryans eased past 9th-seeded Lukasz Kubot and Alexander Peya, 7-5, 6-1, to reach the final on Friday. They will face the Spaniard duo of Marc Lopez and Feliciano Lopez, who defeated Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, in Saturday’s final.

The Bryans are bidding for Grand Slam title No. 17, and if they win they would become the first Open Era duo to own more than two Roland Garros titles.

Lopez and Lopez are bidding to become the first Spanish duo to win the Roland Garros men’s doubles titles since 1990, and just the second Spanish duo to win a men’s doubles Grand Slam title in the Open Era.

Both teams are lucky to still be alive in the draw. The Bryans saved a match point in the round of 16 when they defeated Radek Stepanek and Nenad Zimonjic, 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-3. The Lopez’s saved six match points in their quarterfinal victory over Frenchmen Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

They Bryans have won the title in each of the two other times they saved match point this season (Houston, Rome). Their 112 team titles and 16 Slam titles are the most in tennis history.
