Fresh from her gold medal doubles performance at the 2012 Summer Games in London (with sister Serena, of course), Venus practiced on the courts at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati. She's entered in the combined tournament's women's singles main draw as a wildcard.

Venus will open against Russian Maria Kirilenko, who finished fourth at the Olympics. They both share the same draw as Sam Stosur, Nadia Petrova, and Italian Sara Errani, who is seeded highest at No. 7. They share the same half as top seed Agnieszka Radwanska. Serena, as the second seed, is in the other half of the draw.
