What to Watch on Day 13 of the US Open

One of the big stories of week one, thanks to the drama that followed her second-round win over Jelena Ostapenko and the media maelstrom that followed her run to the round of 16, which ended in a dramatic loss to Barbora Krejcikova, Taylor Townsend joins forces with Katerina Siniakova in the doubles final against Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe. 

Siniakova and Townsend will bid for their third title as a team, while Siniakova looks for her 11th major doubles title. Dabrowski and Routliffe won the 2023 US Open title, their only major doubles title.

N. Djokovic [7] vs C. Alcaraz [2]

Novak Djokovic has experience at breaking up duopolies in men’s tennis. He’s the man that interrupted the domination of Roger Federer and Rafael Nada and eventually surpassed them both and became the all-time Grand Slam king with 24 major titles. 

This year in New York the 38-year-old hopes to interrupt the Sincaraz domination at the majors. The pair of rising forces have combined to win each of the last seven major titles on offer, with Sinner taking four and Alcaraz winning three. 

The Serbian legend will start by facing Alcaraz in Friday’s first semifinal. He has taken the last two meetings with his Spanish rival, in the 2024 Paris Olympics gold medal match and at this year’s Australian Open. 

Alcaraz, a winner of 35 of his last 36 matches, seeks his second US Open title this weekend. 

“I definitely am not going with a white flag on the court,” Djokovic said after his quarterfinal win over Taylor Fritz. “I don’t think anybody does really when they play them, but particularly not me. I put myself in another semifinal of a Grand Slam this year. I have been very consistent, most consistent on slams this season, and that’s what I said at the beginning of the year, where I would like to perform my best tennis and make the best results.

“Here we are. I have another chance, another shot. Hopefully, as I said, I can be fit enough and play well enough to keep up with Carlos. Then it can be anybody’s match.”

J. Sinner [1] vs F. Auger-Aliassime [25]

The night session in Arthur Ashe Stadium features defending champion Jannik Sinner, who bids for his 27th consecutive win at the hard court Grand Slams, and his 13th on the trot at the US Open against surprise semifinalist Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Italian has been a tour de force through his first five matches in New York, dropping just one set to Denis Shapovalov in the third round. He has a 1-2 lifetime record against Auger-Aliassime, who is into his second US Open semifinal and first since 2021, but the Canadian was whipped by Sinner to the tune of just two games won in their last meeting last month in Cincinnati. 

“You have to give credit when it’s due,” Auger-Aliassime said. “When somebody does the work and they improve and they get to that level, you just have to tip your hat off.

“Obviously that’s what I hope to do in my career, as well, to improve it in such a way. Obviously the person scenario would have been to win against him in Cincinnati, and I think, like, let’s say the medium scenario, the okay scenario, is having a chance to actually play him.”
