Rocketing Rafael Jodar, a fast learner and a furious riser in his first season on tour, has made a bit of history.
On Monday, when Jodar, 20, takes his place in the ATP’s Top 10 for the first time, he will celebrate a rapid rise that has taken him from tour newbie to the elite in just ten months.
Jodar, who played his first official tour-level main-draw match on January 20 at the Australian Open, has completed the quickest-ever ascent from tour-level debut to Top 10 in the sport’s history.
That news was disputed by Boris Becker on social media, apparently because he misunderstood the distinction between two different records.
Becker famously made the quickest ascent from his Top 100 debut to his Top 10 debut, another record that Jodar nearly broke, but couldn’t quite surpass.
Becker, happily, still holds on to that piece of history, having made the climb from his Top 100 debut to his Top 10 debut in a mere 210 days. It took Jodar 217.
According to Tennis My Life, Jose Luis Clerc might have something to say about Boris’ rise, but who’s counting (ha ha: everyone).
Jodar, who turned 20 on September 17, is 43-17 on the season at the moment. He will play his first match as a Top 10 player in Paris this week, against Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo.
