Report: Serena Williams Suffered Knee Injury During Wimbledon Loss, Doubles in Doubt
According to a report published by Tom Kershaw of the London Times, Serena Williams suffered a knee injury during her first-round loss to Maya Joint at Wimbledon.
Williams’ agent, Jill Smoller, texted Kershaw the following:
“Serena tweaked her knee at the end of the first set and was therefore excused from her media obligations by the Wimbledon and WTA medical teams. She left site that night unaided and is doing everything she can to be ready for her doubles match.”
Williams elected to skip her obligatory post-match press conference and instead released a statement through the tournament, which allowed her to avoid a fine.
“It was really great to be back at Wimbledon,” Williams said. “I never expected to be here. The atmosphere was amazing. Walking out was amazing. I definitely relished it and missed it and enjoyed the moment more than anything.”
The 44-year-old, with her daughters and her sister Venus in her box, battled for well over two hours before falling to 20-year-old Aussie Maya Joint on Tuesday evening, 6-3 6-7(6) 6-3.
It was not apparent that Williams had suffered any injury and she did not seek medical treatment during the court. Her best tennis, in fact, was played late in the second set as she saved four break points to hold for 6-5, then saved a match point in the ensuing tiebreak.
Williams, a seven-time champion at Wimbledon, was playing her first Grand Slam match since the 2022 US Open.
She has paired with her sister Venus in the women’s doubles draw, and they are slated to face Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra in the first round on Friday.
