Nakashima Wins UTS Rio

Brandon Nakashima enjoyed one of the biggest wins of his career as the global UTS Tour marked another big stepforward with a successful South American debut in Rio.

The American won UTS Rio presented by XP title on Saturday, defeating 17-year-old Brazilian prodigy Guto Miguel 3-0 in the Final (15-14, 17-14, 15-13) and earning himself $368,800. Guto, who made history for Brazil in June by becoming the first Brazilian to win the Boys’ Singles title at Roland Garros, participated in a field that also included Joao Fonseca. 

Nakashima’s 40-minute victory capped a successful two days at the iconic 11,000-seat Maracañazinho venue. 

“It was a great couple of days here,” Nakashima told media after the two-day event. “I really enjoyed my first experience here in Brazil and my first UTS experience. Super happy and thankful to everyone for that.”

Saturday was memorable for Brazilian tennis fans who witnessed Guto reach the final after an epic 3-2 sudden death semi final win over World No.22 and recent HSBC Championships winner Francisco Cerúndolo. Although the teenager fell short in the final, his journey to runner-up included three huge wins against Nick Kyrgios and Nakashima in the group stages before his defeat of Cerúndolo. 

Top-ranked Brazilian Joao Fonseca also competed but didn’t qualify for the semifinals. 

UTS Rio presented by XP marked the second stage for the 2026 UTS Tour after the unforgettable UTS Nîmes in April, played in a 2,000-year-old Roman Amphitheatre with a sell-out crowd. The UTS Tour next moves to Gothenburg, which will be held December 12th and 13th.

Since its inception the event spearheaded by Patrick Mouratoglou has brought its unique tennis format to events in London, Los Angeles, New York, Guadalajara, Hong Kong, Frankfurt, Oslo, Nîmes as well as Rio.
