Daniil Medvedev wasn’t exactly thrilled with his performance against Coleman Wong on Sunday in Hangzhou, but the former World No. 1 is happy to have booked a spot in the semifinals alongside Roman Safiullin at the ATP 250 event.
Medvedev, who is currently eighth in the ATP’s Race to Turin standings, won 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-3 to reach his 68th career tour-level semifinal – and sixth of 2026. Medvedev is currently 371 points ahead of Jodar in the race for the final spot.
“I should have played better,” the 30-year-old said on court after the win. “I should have won in two sets, but, yeah, trying to find my level. So the most important thing is to win, and I’m happy to win and looking forward to tomorrow.”
Medvedev grew up playing junior events with Roman Safiullin, but the pair have never faced each other professionally. That will change on Monday, as Safiullin took out Bu Yunchaokete, 6-3, 6-3, to reach the last four.
“I didn’t actually know that we didn’t play on the ATP Tour because we played so much in juniors. And I’m not sure if we ever played Challengers or Futures, so I think it’s going to be our first meeting in professional tennis,” Medvedev said.
“So it’s going to be fun because we know each other very well. We were on the same team in the ATP Cup and in many different junior tournaments together. So I’m really happy that he’s in the semifinal, and I’m going to try to show my best tomorrow because he’s a very tough opponent.”
Kyrian Jacquet reached his maiden ATP semifinal with a 7-6(12), 6-4 win over No. 5 seed Fabian Marozsan. As a result, the 25-year-old Frenchman is slated to make his Top 100 debut in next week’s ATP rankings.
The Lyon native will face second-seeded Andrey Rublev in the semis. Rublev was two points from defeat in the second set but rallied to take out Hugo Gaston, 6-7(6), 7-6(4), 6-1.
