Matteo Berrettini Withdraws from US Open

Matteo Berrettini is out of the US Open.

The 59th-ranked Italian officially withdrew from the Flushing Meadows major today.

It’s the second Grand Slam withdrawal for Berrettini this season. The 2021 Wimbledon finalist pulled out of Roland Garros in May battling a right oblique injury.

The 29-year-old Berrettini has reached the quarterfinals or better at all four Grand Slams, including his memorable run to the 2019 US Open semifinals.

Berrettini, who has not played a match since his Wimbledon first-round loss in June, joins Grigor Dimitrov as the second former semifinalist to withdraw from the Open. Dimitrov, who withdrew due to the torn pectoral he sustained against Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon, will see his 15-year Grand Slam streak end.

Berrettini’s withdrawal has immediate ramifications for American men.

It puts Brandon Holt into the main draw on ranking so the wild card initially awarded to Holt will now be assigned to Eliot Spizzirri, the USTA announced today. Six of the eight men’s main-draw wild cards were awarded to Americans.
