Joao Fonseca has pulled the plug on the rest of his 2026 season.

The 29th-ranked Fonseca, who missed the US Open and the Asian swing due to an assortment of injuries, has officially ended his 2026 campaign. Fonseca announced he will not defend his Basel championship or play the Rolex Paris Masters.

“As many of you know, I chose not to play the Asian swing to focus 100% on my recovery. The goal was to return in time to defend my title in Basel and finish the year at the Paris Masters,” Fonseca said in an Instagram post. “However, my team and I realized that I am still not in ideal condition to compete at the level I would like, and that there is no need to rush my return.

“Therefore, we decided to prioritize my recovery and focus on planning for 2027. Thank you for your constant love and support throughout the entire year. See you all on court soon.”

The 20-year-old Fonseca, who has not played since winning a Davis Cup match last month, concludes the 2026 season with a 20-13 record.

Fonseca fought back from a two-set deficit to stun Novak Djokovic in Paris en route to the Roland Garros quarterfinals. Since that heroic French Open fightback, Fonseca has posted a 6-4 record, including his win over Swiss Dominic Stricker in September’s Davis Cup tie.

Fonseca pulled out of the Cincinnati Open due to an abdominal injury on his left side. The 2023 US Open boys champion Fonseca started this season two months late due to a back injury and posted a 1-3 record in his first four matches.

Though Fonseca picked up his play with that rousing Roland Garros run, he ends this season with a trio of quarterfinals: Monte-Carlo, Munich and the French Open.

Fonseca, who made his US Open main-draw debut last year, withdrew from the Flushing Meadows major in August due to the abdominal injury.
