Holger Rune Withdraws from Wimbledon

Holger Rune will put his Wimbledon dreams on hold for a year.

Former world No. 4 Rune withdrew from this month’s Wimbledon as he continues rehab from a ruptured Achilles tendon and a knee injury.

Rune joins former Wimbledon semifinalist Lorenzo Musetti and American Sebastian Korda in withdrawing from Wimbledon.

Wimbledon starts on June 29th.

“Missing Wimbledon is not an easy decision to make, but the long-term goal remains unchanged: to come back stronger and ready to play at the highest level,“ Rune said in a statement issued today. “Every day I am closer and the progress is very rewarding. So I’m very encouraged. See you soon!”

On October 19th, Rune was leading Ugo Humbert 6-4, 2-2 when he ruptured his Achilles tendon in the Stockholm semifinals. A tearful Rune retired from the match and underwent surgery last October. Rune has made a rapid recovery from surgery, but suffered a knee issue while training for his comeback last month.

The 23-year-old Dane’s team said he’s progressing well in his rehab, but it not quite ready for the rigors of tournament play.

“[Holger’s] rehabilitation continues to progress very well. Both the Achilles tendon and the knee respond positively, and he is constantly improving in all aspects,” Rune’s team said. “All the tests are also good. His mobility on the court is getting better and better, and he can now train at a high level for longer without any problems.”

In March, Rune told Tales From Tennis podcast he’s excited to return and challenge world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz.

“I know I can compete one-on-one with Sinner and Alcaraz, and every time I go out on court against them, I know I have a chance to beat them,” said Rune, who is 2-3 lifetime vs. Sinner and has split four meetings vs. world No. 1 Alcaraz. “I know they both feel uncomfortable when they play against me and that gives me extra motivation.”
