Brandon Nakashima played bold front-runner to land a career first.

San Diego native Nakashima led start to finish sweeping Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-3 to charge into his maiden ATP Masters 1000 semifinal in Montreal today.

“Super happy with making my first semifinal,” Nakashima said. “It was a goal of mine at the beginning of the year to try to do well at one of these Masters 1000s tournaments. So, yeah, to be able to do it for first time here is really special.”

In a confident service performance, Nakashima ripped 11 aces against 1 double fault, won 30 of 36 first-serve points and denied all four break points he faced in a clean 77-minute victory.

It is Nakashima’s 14th career semifinal, including his fifth semifinal of the season.

Since hiring former Top 10 player—and former Roger Federer doubles partner—Wayne Ferreira as coach in June, Nakashima has reached semifinals at three of four tournaments he’s played with the experienced South African tactician in his box.

“I mean, obviously my serve and my forehand, I think, has been really in form the last couple weeks,” said Nakashima, who celebrated his 25th birthday on August 3rd and is the oldest man still standing in the singles field. “It’s something that we’ve been working on a lot
with my team and everybody.

“But obviously just the overall level of confidence, I think, is really high right now. Mentally, going into every match knowing that I can do well and I can play aggressive, I’ll give myself a good chance to win the match. So, yeah, really happy about all of that.”

The 25-year-old Nakashima will play either 19-year-old Rafael Jodar or 22-year-old Frenchman Arthur Fils for a spot in the Montreal final.

The 19th-seeded Darderi won the toss and elected to receive.

Big mistake.

Though Nakashima stands 6’2”, he’s smooth service motion, racquet acceleration and decisive wrist snap at the top of the toss make him a menacing server. Nakashima beats opponents with precision rather than pure pace on serve and he befuddled Darderi with a clever and varied serve spins in the first set.

Not only was Nakashima outplaying the Italian, fortune was favoring the American. When Nakashima knocked a backhand pass down the line it clipped the tape, catapulted over Darderi’s racquet and landed in as the San Diego native stretched his lead to 4-1 after only 16 minutes of play.

Slamming successive aces, Nakashima stamped a strong hold for 5-2.

A red-hot Nakashima ripped a forehand return winner down the line for Love-30 in the eighth game.

A rattled Darderi dumped a horrid dropper into net then dropped serve—and the set—at love launching a double fault well long to end the 26-minute opener.

Dominant on serve, Nakashima won 16 of 19 service points and pumped four aces in the first set.

An improved transition game and a willingness to accelerate through his forehand and add some shape to that stroke has helped Nakashima make this break through run. Nakashima was 9 of 12 at net today, including an exceptional serve and stretch forehand volley winner holding for a 3-2 second-set lead. Darderi drilled an ace out wide holding to level after six games.

Saving a break point with a bounce smash, Nakashima smacked his 10th ace holding for 4-3 then used scoreboard pressure to squeeze the decisive break.

In a jittery and sloppy game, Darderi missed a couple of forehands then sprayed his second double fault of the game and sixth of the match to cede serve and a 5-3 lead to the American.

On his second match point, Nakashima closed when Darderi netted a concession drop shot attemped.

The 28th-seeded Nakashima will carry a 26-15 record into the semifinals.
