Who is the rising French star who has rocketed more than 180 places in the rankings this season? Here are ten things to know about Arthur Gea.

1. He’s making a splash in his Masters 1000 debut. Gea has hit the ground running in Shanghai, defeating Jaime Faria, No. 30 seed Ugo Humbert and third-seeded Shelton to reach the round of 16. Sunday’s victory over Shelton, the reigning US Open finalist, marked his first career Top 10 win and his biggest triumph to date. “It’s a really good win, after a really good year, and I’m really happy about it,” said Gea after the win.

2. His rise has been meteoric. Gea started the 2026 season ranked No. 241 in the world, but has surged into the Top 100 and reached a career-high No. 56 in October. At Shanghai, he is up nine spots to No. 48 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings with his latest win.

3. He has already claimed an ATP Trophy. Gea captured his maiden ATP Tour title in Los Cabos on August 1, defeating World No. 20 Francisco Cerundolo and defending champion Denis Shapovalov in the final. Earlier in the season, he reached his first ATP quarterfinal in Montpellier.

4. He made a memorable run at the US Open. After entering the main draw as a lucky loser, Gea made the most of his opportunity in New York, reaching the fourth round before falling to Botic van de Zandschulp in a five-set thriller. It was his best Grand Slam result to date and another major milestone in his breakout campaign.

5. His Grand Slam breakthrough began in Australia. Gea dropped just 14 games across six sets to qualify for his first Grand Slam main draw at the Australian Open in January. He then stunned World No. 19 Jiri Lehecka in the first round before pushing former champion Stan Wawrinka to five sets in the second round.

6. He’s a former Top 10 junior. Gea climbed as high as No. 8 in the ITF junior rankings in 2023, reaching the US Open boys’ singles semifinals, where he lost to Learner Tien. He also partnered with Branko Djuric to reach the Wimbledon boys’ doubles final that season.

7. He has built his success from the Challenger circuit. Before making waves on the ATP Tour, Gea earned his first Challenger title in Noumea in January 2026. He also reached Challenger finals in Zadar and Granby, compiling a 23-8 record at that level this season.

8. His coach has helped guide his breakthrough. Gea is coached by Grégoire Jacq, former World No.332. Jacq says that Gea is driven by getting better every day. “Arthur is making progress on all the little details: he’s becoming sharper and more focused on his determination and intensity,” he told L’équipe in Shanghai. “I’m very proud of him. He’s constantly moving forward. Things are moving fast because he’s so strong. Improving is what drives him. And by not making the same mistakes twice, you save a huge amount of time.”

9. The Next Step is Moving forward. His coach says that Gea’s focus on becoming more aggressive has opened up new horizons in his game. “Playing aggressively – moving forward – is essential if you want to be a top player. He knows that; it was his goal when he called me in July,” said Jacq.

“Coming to the net isn’t something you just do on a whim. You have to drill it, execute it in high-pressure moments, approach it intelligently, and get a feel for the right timing… He can still improve, but he’s already a different player than he was in July. We had a crucial video session at the US Open, and the next day he jokingly told me, “I’m a new player; this is the new me.”

10. He did not have an ATP win prior to 2026. After today’s win over Shelton he now has 15.
